Beer for people, vodka for horses. The noble road registers in the eighteenth–century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth

Travel registers, although they often appear in the sources of 18th century, are not very popular among researchers due to the monotony of entries and the lack of broader references or interesting descriptions that can be used in the study of early modern travels.

New approach to those sources is included in the newest article wtitten by prof. Bożena Popiołek: “Beer for people, vodka for horses. The noble road registers in the eighteenth–century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth”. The article was published in the journal Saeculum Christianum.

Travel registers constitute an intriguing source for research on the daily life of noble courts in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Little is known about commercial journeys undertaken for business or other purposes besides tourism or education. Meanwhile, road registries provide valuable information about the costs of travel, its organization, provisioning, and the safety of travellers.
