New article in Journal “Przegląd Historyczny”
We kindly recommend you to read new article, that is a part of our project: dr hab. Anna Penkała-Jastrzębska Public rows and private interests. Anna Katarzyna Radziwiłł née Sanguszko and the internal affairs of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth during the War of the Polish Succession (1733–1735)
In the article the author explores the political activity of Anna Katarzyna Radziwiłł née Sanguszko, wife of the Grand Chancellor of Lithuania, during the War of the Polish Succession, 1733–1735. The noblewoman’s activities in that period have not been analysed in detailed so far. Yet research into the activity of the chancellor’s wife, who controlled the policy of the Nesvizh Radziwiłłs, makes it possible to understand even better the attitude of the representatives of the House of Radziwiłł during the electoral struggle. In addition, the surviving source material in the form of private correspondence sheds light on Anna Katarzyna’s political concepts, which she sought to implement in the analysed period. Particularly important were her relations with Charles III Philip, Elector Palatine, as well as her diplomatic contacts with both sides of the conflict. The author also explores the significance of the noblewoman’s stay in Gdańsk, among supporters of Stanisław Leszczyński, to her private political objectives. Another aspect, captured in the study, is the complex family relations among the Radziwiłłs.
