New article by dr hab. Anna Penkała-Jastrzębska
The diplomatic activity of Tomasz Mogilnicki on behalf of the Lithuanian Chancellor Anna Katarzyna Radziwiłł née Sanguszko in the years 1730–1737A study on the functioning of private diplomacy at the women’s magnate court” is the newest article published by Anna Penkała-Jastrzębska.
The purpose of the article is devoted to the analysis of the activity of Tomasz Mogilnicki, a servant and at the same time a trusted man, employed in the services of the Radziwiłł estate . Mogilnicki was one of the most trusted people for Anna Katarzyna Radziwiłł née Sanguszko, and her main representative to conduct foreign interests . In the analyzed period, Mogilnicki was involved in a number of activities in the interests fundamental to Anna Katarzyna – through the politically and diplomatically difficult period of free elections after the death of August II, to agitation in the court circle for her sons, as well as the search for ways to obtain royal favour for the Radziwiłłs’ relatives and close family members . One of the most important matters, however, was negotiating at the Mannheim court the marriage of Hieronim Florian Radziwiłł to Maria Franciszka Dorota von Sulzbach, granddaughter of Elector Charles III Philip Wittelsbach . The preserved correspondence allows us not only to examinate the activity of Mogilnicki himself but is also an important source for the analysis of the assumptions of the Radziwiłł’s marriage and their financial policy in the first half of the 18th century
